Chapter 11

“Stay here,” I commanded.

“There is someone at the door,” Alexa said.

“No shit, Sherlock,” I said to the machine.

“No reason to use vulgarity,” Alexa said. I couldn’t believe my ears.

“Alexa shut down,” Tracy instructed. Then, “Who the hell could that be at this hour?”

“I’m about to find out.”

Reaching into my jacket pocket, I pulled out my .45.

“Jesus, where did you get that?” Tracy barked.

“I’m a private dick,” I reminded her. “We all carry guns.”

“Be careful,” she said.

I made my way through the living room and into the vestibule. I killed the lights, and the space went dark. That’s when I noticed the red, white, and blue police cruiser flashers spilling in through the glass on the French windows.

“It’s the police, Tracy,” I announced.

I holstered my gun, inhaled a breath, opened the door.

“You Keeper Marconi?” the uniformed cop asked.

“Depends on who’s asking,” I said.

A man appeared just then from out of the cold darkness. It was Miller.

“I am, smart mouth,” he said.

“Oh,” I said, raising my hands in surrender. “Busted, Copper.”
